San Diego, California
The La Playa project is a complete renovation of a 1984 home located in San Diego and built by architect Scott Emsley, a practitioner of organic architecture. In developing the concept for the renovation of the main house, HoH remained respectful of the home’s existing architectural details while modernizing it for a growing family. To enhance the property’s sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean HoH balanced the unique original architectural details, like the ribbed concrete walls with warm, nurturing walnut and teak woods, custom framed glazing, organic textures, and soft furnishings. Ivory glazed tiles that Megan (Founder of House of Heacock) designed for Los Angeles based firm, Commune, were used for the ten foot powder room walls. Carefully sourced slabs of limestone were installed in the kitchen and main bathroom along with a one of a kind teak tub. HoH kept all the lighting simple to maintain focus on the organic finishes and blue ocean views. The La Playa project is featured in San Diego Design Week 2021. Photography by Chris Park.
